What's a 337 (and for that matter, a 20th or 25th Anniversary) GTI?
Back in the 70s, while VW was developing cars derisively called "econoboxes" by the US Automotive press, a few engineers surreptitiously developed a sporty version, codenamed "337" and eventually released as the GTI. In 2002, they released a European 25th Anniversary, and then released 1,500 337s when the US market clamored for them. The 337 is a Silver GTI 1.8t with the following changes:
- 6 speed gearbox
- Chin spoiler, side skirts, rear spoiler, bumper kit
- 18" x 8.5" BBS wheels
- Bilstein shocks, lowered 1"
- (Audi) 8/10" brakes w/red calipers
- Recaro seats
- Michelin Pilot Sports
- Interior Aluminum accents
- Retro "Golf ball" gear shift
- Red highlights: seats, leather steering wheel, seat belts, etc.
It proved quite popular, so in 2003 VW released 4,000 20th Anniversary editions, available in 3 colors, similarly equipped, but substituted OZ wheels for the BBSs and without the interior highlights.
I found this car on vwvortex.com, nearly 3 years old with under 16k miles. When you get one, you are contractually obligated to have a worship/mod page. Currently sporting:
- APR 93 Octane Chip
- Forge Diverter Valve (to handle uprated boost)
- 20GB Phatbox music server (with interface into factory head unit)
- Grounding kit, to cope with surges in the electrical system, and supposedly to improve HP and MPG, though I suspect it can only be measured with decimal points.
- Euro instrument panel
- Grill for the chin spoiler
- BBS wheel caps (the car shipped with BBS wheels + VW caps)
- I got rid of the hideous front plate. About a year ago, I got two tickets in 24 hours, so I put it on. It's off now, and no problems from Officer Friendly so far.
